Real life stories about ordinary people empowered to seize the opportunities that came their way, thanks to Manappuram Gold Loans.

Chairman’s message: THE IDEA BEHIND SAFALYA Safalya

At the outset, let me express my gratitude to our Director Mr. Shailesh Mehta who first suggested the idea behind “Safalya”.

It so happened that during our Board meetings of recent months, I had frequently talked about our experience of recent years that a steady shift is taking place in the profile of the typical gold loan customer. For a long time, gold loans were considered a loan to be taken as the last resort, a taboo to be broken only when the situation was dire. It is an impression that persists to this day, so much that among the general public a frequently heard opinion is that gold loan providers make money out of the distress of their customers. Unfortunately, it is an attitude that has coloured the perceptions of our regulators as well.

The association of gold loans with distress may or may not have been valid earlier, but it is certainly not true anymore. Today, about half of our gold loan customers belong to the small business community, the traders, shopkeepers and the self-employed, who use gold loans to meet the requirements of day-to-day business. They also use gold loans for exceptional needs, like the requirement to build up extra stock during a busy season. Interestingly, even where they have availed credit limits from the banking system, gold loans continue to be used for its flexibility and hassle-free experience.

And then, even among those who resort to gold loans during emergencies, a significant proportion uses it to bridge shortfalls thereby allowing vital commitments to be honoured. In our day to day life, we are often required to raise money for various purposes. Sometimes, the requirement is for a certain fixed amount of money for a particular purpose which can go ahead only if the required funds are raised in full measure. For instance, in order to secure a child’s admission into a professional college, a family may need, say one lakh rupees. But circumstances are such that despite their best efforts, they manage only eighty thousand. The family is in crisis. After all, it is their child’s future prospects that are at stake and it looks as if it’s all about to slip away from their grasp. Under these circumstances, a gold loan can easily make up the shortfall and allow a life-changing event to bear fruit. In fact, the same situation can also arise with respect to a medical emergency, when the choice can be stark, between life and death.

During an interaction with our Directors, I talked about this disconnect between the popular perception about gold loans and the ground reality all too obvious to us—the insiders in the trade—that gold loans had actually come a long way from a “distress” loan. At this point, Mr. Shailesh Mehta put forward the idea that Manappuram should try and document stories about ordinary people who make use of gold loans in productive ways. And that, in turn, led to the idea of holding a nation-wide contest to document outstanding examples of how people use gold loans in different productive ways in their day to day lives.

Later, as the final details were given shape, we decided to call the contest “Safalya” and it was held in March of this year. The contest was open to all our gold loan borrowers regular in the conduct of their account. They were required to submit a write-up detailing how the gold loans they had availed from Manappuram were put to a productive use in their businesses. The response was encouraging and many of the stories were touching and inspiring. While the people taking part belonged to different parts of the country, their stories had a common theme of how ordinary people were empowered to seize the opportunities that came their way, thanks to their ready access to gold loans.
As our corporate tagline says, at Manappuram, we are in the business of “Energising gold, empowering lives”.

A tractor driver becomes tractor owner Safalya

Paka Dillip Dora, used to be a tractor driver living in a village called Erendra in the Ganjam District of Orissa. His father is a marginal farmer owning a small plot of one and a half acres in a drought-prone area. Dillip worked on daily wages as a tractor driver with a landlord in a neighbouring village. His brother, who works as a mechanic in Dubai, occasionally sends money home and the family was considering buying more agricultural land with the savings when a civil construction project came up in the area. Consequently, there was good demand for tractors to remove soil. Dillip decided to shelve the idea of going for more land and instead thought of buying a second hand tractor.

Paka Dillip Dora

A deal was struck with a prospective seller and an advance amount of Rs.20,000/- was paid to seal the agreement to buy the tractor for Rs.2.80 lakhs. The agreement stipulated that the balance amount would be paid on or before January 10, 2011 failing which the advance amount would be forfeited.

As the due date approached, it turned out that the balance amount could not be raised in full and he was about to forfeit the advance amount. It was at such a moment of despair when he was all but resigned to washing his hands off the advance amount of Rs.20,000 that he decided to reengage himself as a tractor driver with the landlord.

Coincidentally, that very same day, he chanced to see a television advertisement for Manappuram Gold Loan at his employer’s residence. He promptly went home, enquired about the available gold, gathered whatever was there and came to Manappuram’s Old Bus Stand Branch at Berhampur. It was a pleasant surprise when the branch officials told him he was eligible for a loan of Rs.56,000/-. This was well above his expectations and more than adequate for the purpose. The balance amount was paid on the last day of the deadline and today, as a proud tractor-owner, he earns about a thousand rupees a day from soil removing work in the construction sector.

V Rajani is a young widow from Palakkad who runs a small business supplying cooked food items like “vada”, “appam”, “bajji” etc. to the pushcart vendors around the city bus stand. It was the death of her husband two years ago and the compulsion to earn a livelihood and support her family that forced her to start off on her own.

V. Rajani

Like most Indian women, she had some gold and with that she came to Manappuram’s Palakkad Town RS Road branch for a gold loan. And now she earns anywhere up to twelve hundred rupees a day from her business. What is more, over the course of two years, she managed to save enough money to buy a small plot of land. Today, but for the gold loans that she takes from Manappuram, she has no other liabilities. She now looks forward to building a house for her family consisting of her mother and child.

SAFALYA — A Last Word Safalya
By S.V.R. Jogarao, General Manager, Gold Loan Marketing Dept.

During the six decades of Manappuram’s existence, many a customer has walked into our premises in times of need and walked out with the money that solved their problems. From farmers to the self-employed, from traders, businessmen, housewives, salaried persons to even the NRIs, everyone’s needs are being met at Manappuram. It could be anything, say, the purchase of farming inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, agricultural implements or labour costs. For a businessman or trader, it could be the need to hold additional stocks during a busy season or to meet some unforeseen contingency. For a salaried person, the need could be the admission of children to schools or college, getting through emergencies like sudden hospitalisation, a marriage in the family etc.

At Manappuram, we thought we should try and collect some of these stories from our customers across the country about how gold loans came to their aid at crucial moments in their lives. We felt that many of our customers would remember Manappuram for the change it had brought into their lives though the timely access to funds that a gold loan represents. That was how, in March this year, “Safalya” came to be held as a contest for the best success stories from the world of gold loans. Our customers were required to write in with their own unique stories about the productive ways in which gold loans from Manappuram were put to use.

The response was overwhelming. The testimonials were in the hundreds and expressed heartfelt feelings. Many felt that Manappuram was like a best friend to them. Some were emotional in their responses, because when they first came to Manappuram, they were in dire need of money. They were now deeply grateful that thanks to Manappuram, their problems could be overcome. And so, even as the individual experiences were quite different from the rest, the last lines in each story were rather similar. Manappuram had made their lives easy!

And that, in a way, sums up the success mantra of Manappuram; we are a successful organisation built on a foundation of successful customers.
